History of the Lodge
Rose & Thistle Mark Lodge was formed from St.John's TI Bolton because of the need for another mark lodge. The name was chosen to commemorate the amalgamation of the Grand Lodge of England and Grand Lodge of Scotland. It was consecrated on 23rd September 1872 at the Freemasons Hall, Church Institute, Bolton and it's first master was George P. Brockbank. Subscriptions in 1873 were 1 Guinea and by the end of 1873, Mount Ararat Royal Ark Mariner Lodge was in the process of being formed from amongst the members of Rose & Thistle. In 1877 it had become apparent that as most members came from the Wigan area that they should move to King Street, Wigan.
On 2nd December 1893, the lodge was honoured by the presence of the Most W.Pro.Grand Master, RT.Hon.Earl of Euston and Rt.W.Deputy Grand Master, Rt.Hon.Viscount Dungarven and Rt.W.Provincial Grand Master, Rt.Hon.Earl of Lathom. After the meeting they attended what they called a Conversazionne at the Public Hall, King Street, Wigan. After the Master's song, the brethren passed round the hall in procession saluting the Pro.Grand Master in passing. Ladies were seated in the gallery.
1949: The statement of Accounts shows an expenditure of £11/3/4d for cigars.
1965: The Keystone Collarette was presented to the lodge on 8th December.
1970: The Festive Board at the December meeting was disrupted by a power cut but they continued by candlelight.
1972: The Centenary meeting took place on 11th October.
2003: The closure of Tower Buildings in Wigan resulted in the lodge moving to Westhoughton.
2007: The Lodge then moved back to Wigan and Pemberton Hall in February 2007.
