MASONIC CONCERT

Stanley Gregson, PProvGJW, of Rose and Thistle Lodge No. 158 just happened be looking through his late wife’s sewing box when he came across an old and yellowed newspaper cutting from the Wigan Observer of 27th May 1982 and a report ‘100 YEARS AGO’ where it was recorded that the daughter Lodge of Rose and Thistle, Murray Mark, had held a Masonic Concert.

The report is as follows:

MASONIC Concert: On Friday last the local members of the ancient and loyal craft of Freemasons had, we believe for the first time, afforded to them the opportunity of enjoying a musical evening in their sanctum, devoid of ceremony and that ritual of which they are certainly proud.

A large room, which is the Masonic Hall, had been tastefully decorated by Brother Murray, the Worshipful Master of the Mark Lodge, the promoters of the concert. There was a good sprinkling of the fair sex present, whose natural curiosity was at least gratified by a peep at much of that which their sterner halves are so thoroughly conversant….

Stanley Gregson, P.Prov.G.J.W.
