History of the Lodge

Updated 18.12.19
Westhoughton Mark Lodge was formed by ten dedicated Mark Masons and was consecrated at Wigan Masonic Hall on 4th. November, 1944 by the R.W. Provincial Grand Master - Major A.M. Pooley TD.

The Lodge was opened at 12.30pm and there were thirty-seven visiting Brethren present with over half of them being from Wigan Masonic Hall, namely thirteen members from Murray Mark Lodge No. 490 and eleven from Rose and Thistle Mark Lodge No. 158.

The first Worshipful Master to be Installed in the Chair of Adoniram was W.Bro. Albert Brown and the Installation ceremony was conducted by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master - W.Bro. J. F. Dixon. It would appear that there was insufficient members present to carry out all the duties of the day and therefore some visitors were co-opted to assist.

There is no record of the banquet but this was six months after VE day and three months before VJ day and food was not plentiful at the time. The Charity collection raised £7.00 and the Lodge was closed at 2.30pm.
The Lodge is now established at Brookfield Masonic Hall, Peel Street, Westhoughton and is fortunate to be able to meet in one of the nicest Masonic halls in the Province. It has had its fluctuations of membership over the years but is currently healthy and vibrant with a membership currently (July 2008) of 44.

It is interesting to note that the front of the summons still states the dress as "Dark Morning Dress or Uniform" which reflects the early years when members were returning from their duties in the forces.

The current Secretary of the Lodge is W.Bro. Steve Gregory, who will always be pleased to accommodate visitors should they wish to attend any of the meetings and he can be contacted on 01942 818702 or email
