ROYAL MAIL SURCHARGE WARNING

I received a Royal Mail card through the letterbox yesterday advising that “insufficient postage had been paid” for the letter and demanding a surcharge of £2.50.

I went to the local sorting office at Chorley today and was shown the letter (shown in the attached photo) which states “Invalid Stamp” and the amount of the fee to pay.
This is one of the new bar-coded stamps and either the new machines the Royal Mail have introduced are not reading the codes correctly or, as I suspected all along, the reason they have introduced the bar-coded stamps is so that they cannot be re-used as once passed through the machine the bar-code will be recorded and if attempted to be re-used it will be rejected and the surcharge added.
I asked the guy behind the counter for his thoughts and he could not see any reason why the letter had been surcharged but said that the process was carried out by another office!
In the end I decided not to pay the surcharge!

Should anyone recognise their handwriting on the envelope or the letter please contact me.
