‘The Mark and the Arch’ Lecture at Newton Mark on 19th May

Newton Mark Lodge, No 1003, meet at the Masonic Hall, Bryn. They rounded off the 2024/20245 season with a lecture. The Lodge had started off the season in October with an advancement ceremony, when WBro Barry Fisher advanced his son Ian, into the Newton Lodge. For their January meeting; VWBro Ian Nairn gave a lecture on ‘The Traditional History of the Third Degree.’

The Installation meeting in March saw WBro Lucas Kelly return to the chair in the presence of the APGM, VWBro Geoff Bury. Now to the meeting held on 19th May. WBro Lucas Kelly invited VWBro Ian Nairn to take the chair in order to deliver a Fred Lomax lecture called, ‘The Mark and the Arch,’ or as Ian put it, England v Scotland.

The lecture charted the journey of Mark Masonry in England from the time when the Mark Degree was practiced in Craft Lodges to the formation of Mark Lodges in England that received their Warrants from the Royal Arch of Scotland? There were many disputes about this situation as you can imagine.

The Ancients and Moderns came together in 1813 and UGLE was formed and this lead to the separation of The Mark Degree from the Craft and Royal Arch. This separation ultimately led to the formation of The Grand Lodge of Mark Masons of England in 1856. VWBro Ian delivered the lecture with his usual enthusiasm and humour.

When the Lodge was closed it was time to dine. An enjoyable meeting; excellent food and good company, is there any better way to round off a season? We wish all members of Newton Mark a good summer, especially WBro Arthur Robinson who will be promoted to P.G.J.O at Grand Lodge on 9th September and so will be returning to Newton Mark’s, October meeting as VWBro Arthur Robinson.
